PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING SCIENCE
Science is a method of inquiry about everything around the world. In short, it makes us think about what we are doing and why. Philosophy of science takes science to an extent which promotes critical analysis of our own work. Learning Science helps us in thinking about how and why something is done, and how it might be done better. Teaching scientific concepts through different experiments or activities encourages students for asking critical questions that any curious individual would be asking not only in class but also in real life situations.
Science, as it is taught and practiced in an educational setting, is concerned with questions about the nature and validates knowledge on the basis of its observations.
It basically deals what the nature and essential characteristics of scientific knowledge are, how this knowledge is obtained, presented, verified, and validated. It motivates children to critically analyze the assumptions of scientists about the basic or fundamental physical, biological and social 'stuff' that we need to think about when trying to understand the world.
Though Science plays a major role in development of the world but it motivates children to engage in the process of inquiry and also think of ethical issues for considering the effects that scientific advancement has on people & nature directly or indirectly. And also reach a state where decision making and problem solving can be essential skill learned by learner through real life activities.
Science, as it is taught and practiced in an educational setting, should be concerned with questions about the nature and an environment which satisfies their curiosity. From a pedagogical point of view, as a science faculty our aim should be asking students to reflect upon their activities when engaging in science. Reflecting about the goals and procedures of problem solving through scientific activities helps someone to solve problems better. It also enables one to adapt & modify old goals, motivates learner to learn and take it forward to new environments.
VISION
Science department of Modern English School believes that “Science is a way of life”. We aspire to create students who are critical thinkers, problem solvers, good analysts, and good team players. We are willing to develop minds to be lifelong learners, have curiosity in mind and apply the scientific concepts in real life issues and also making connections between scientific disciplines too.
21st century is the world of young minds having core skills like systematic observation, identification, description, experimental behavior etc. It won’t be wrong if we say that we emphasize on critical thinking and logical reasoning through our activities. It’s our collective commitment to develop a concept that Science has practical applications and it has to be understood in its context amongst children. It will be our endeavor to inculcate the habit of discovering, create, understand, inspire, educate and collaborate for development of learners.
We believe that Science is best learned through experiences and it is the motivation to learn which helps learners to understand the importance of deep learning. To that end, we organize our students into small groups and provide each group with necessary tools. It is introduced with fun and relevant experiments which spark and maintain students’ interest. Most of our experiments are hands-on, requiring very little instruction where the teacher acts as a facilitator, making observations, asking questions, and guiding the students’ thought process to keep motivation to learn alive always.
Our vision is to help children understand that science is everywhere and all of us can use its principles to make our lives better.
